Editorial services supporting authors who write about animals

Services

Copyediting

Copyediting is the most basic and traditional type of editing. It concentrates on the mechanics of the written language.

Substantive Editing

Substantive editing occurs before copyediting and deals with the structure, organization, purpose, and presentation of the manuscript.

Proofreading

Proofreading always follows copyediting and precedes final publication, so it is one of the last steps in the editorial production process.

Veterinary Medical Editing

Veterinary medical editing differs from traditional editing because it requires knowledge and usage of specialized veterinary medical terminology, and the audience is composed of veterinary professionals.

Animal-Sensitive Editing

The mission of animal-sensitive editing is to assist authors in thoughtfully and truthfully representing animals across all literary genres or types of writing.

“I’ve often said that to make change you must reach the heart, and to reach the heart you must tell stories. The way we write about other animals shapes the way we see them — we must recognize that every individual nonhuman animal is a ‘who,’ not a ‘what.’ I hope that we can advance our standards in this regard globally to refer to animals as individuals, and no longer refer to them as objects, so that the stories we tell spark compassion and action for these fellow beings.”

-Jane Goodall
